#Case Study 5:
Status: Visa Approved at Abuja Embassy (1st attempt)
School: University of New Haven
Course: M.Sc Environmental Sciences
COA: $32,565
Funding: 50% Scholarship
Interview Date: 15th March 2023
VO: Good morning; pass me your documents
Me: Good morning ma, here it is (smiling and fixating my eyes on her all through the interview)
VO: What’s this master’s degree going to do for you?
Me: Thank you, I am currently a Scientific Officer in my organization where we work to address land degradation and offer solutions to climate change. With this master’s degree, I will be able to contribute advanced knowledge to my organisation and as well gain promotion to become a Senior Scientific Officer on my return.
(I had a rush of confidence as I spoke. The night before, in the Google Meet mock session, I was told to work on my confidence level as it seems not more than 20%, Mr. Adeleye, I’m very grateful)
VO: How is it related to your work?
Me: The curriculum offers a concentration in Environmental Chemistry which is an area I want to research as my first degree is in Chemistry. Also, my organisation will be setting up a soil testing laboratory where I intend to return back to.
(I figured that she was reading my DS160, and I fully loaded it with my qualification and experience)
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: On the 1st of this month, I got a rejection letter from Yale School of the Environment (YSE) but with a promise that I am on the waiting list for future consideration. I also applied to and got admitted by UNH, and NJIT, the fourth school I applied to was the University of Delaware.
VO: she starts to type, and it looks like a long time, I then asked if there’s any other information she would like to know, and she told me not to worry and that she will ask me as she’s still typing.
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: My father, who is an Indian-trained mechanical engineer and owns a mechanical engineering workshop, will be sponsoring me. He was a consultant for Lagos State Government when they were to launch the BRT bus service in 2007 under Governor Fashola. (I didn’t even mention any amount that he earns monthly or annually 🤭)
In addition, I have a 50% scholarship from the school, and my office has granted my fully paid study leave request.
VO: That’s fine, she still continues typing, and there is silence for few seconds.
Me: Once again, I asked her: can I tell you about my marital status?
VO: Of course, you can.
Me: I am married. I married my wife on _th ___, 202_, and we have a son (I told her his age).
VO: What does your wife do, and how will she cope while you’re away in the US?
Me: She works with a British curriculum school presently. And my siblings are living very close to us, so she will get emotional support from them. I told her the profession of my siblings too.
VO: Have you traveled out of the country before?
Me: I’ve not had the opportunity for that until now.
VO: Okay, that’s not a problem. She concluded with the typing, and my eyes gazed at her, waiting to hear the golden words; that was how her hand went to the blue paper stack while she was still looking at the computer (my spirit was about to revolt, lol), she just quickly turned and picked the white paper and then said to me: “congratulations, I have approved your visa.”
It was as though I was dreaming!!!
Truly, I experienced what people used to say; I didn’t hear her clearly again; only thing I remember is “DHL”, “next week” and “this paper”. 😂🤣😂🤣😂
I collected it, thanked her, and started praising God as I exited the Embassy.
I really appreciate all the YouTube channels (Unik Jane, Baet Lamad), Telegram (Baet Lamad, Ogbu), and WhatsApp groups (Ogbu, SirDon, Success Mock, Abuja, and Lagos) and of course, the robust contributions from the genuine people in those platforms that I gleaned from for over one year in my pursuit of MY AMERICAN 🇺🇸 DREAM.
Thank you all, and I pray your dreams will come true by the special grace of God in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen 🙏🏾
Cheers to a new beginning🥂
